Academic Orthopaedics of Central Illinois (AOCI) is a multi-faceted organization designed to facilitate:
- The delivery of clinical orthopaedic services through Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, Illinois
- Orthopaedic education of medical students and residents
- Clinical and basic research
The company was founded by D. Gordon Allan, M.D., Associate Professor and Chairman of the Division of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. The purpose of the company is to make access to orthopaedic care, enrollment in clinical trials, collaboration in basic research and the delivery of orthopaedic education more accessible than it might otherwise be at an academic institution. For example, Dr. Allan personally maintains this website so rapid and frequent updates are possible. Furthermore, through this website communication with Dr. Allan and his staff is made possible.
With regards to Orthopadic surgery, Dr. Allan offers joint replacement of the hip, knee, and shoulder, including minimally invasive surgery to insert these prostheses. He has a secondary interest in orthopaedic oncology (bone and soft tissue tumors).

Clinical Services
Dr. Allan is specialized in the revision of failed total joints and acts as a co-developer of a specialized implant designed specifically for difficult hip joint reconstruction and revision cases.
Dr. Allan is also conducting a pre-market trial of metal on metal resurfacing arthroplasty of the hip. This is much more conservative of the patient's bone that may be useful for a future reconstruction.
Dr. Allan also performs non-arthroplasty alternatives (non-prosthetic replacement) of the hip, knee, and shoulder, including Osteotomy (to realign joints), arthroscopy and cartilage transplantation.
